SCHOOL-BASED SERVICES

UMFS has more than 30 years experience in working with children and youth with emotional and behavioral challenges at Charterhouse School. Over the last three decades, our staff has developed and practiced a strengths-based approach focusing on meeting four universal developmental needs identified by the Circle of Courage™: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity.

Charterhouse School

Charterhouse School serves students from the greater Richmond area with special or specialized education needs and students in UMFS’ Treatment Center. Charterhouse School was established in 1979, licensed by the Virginia Department of Education and accredited by the Virginia Association of Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF).

The Charterhouse School Day Program provides specialized education services to youth 11-21 years of age who struggle to function in their current school setting due to learning, behavioral, or emotional challenges.

Students with Asperger's Syndrome
Charterhouse School offers integrated programs designed to meet the unique needs of students with Asperger's Syndrome. In addition to academic instruction, services support social, organizational, behavioral, and independent living skills development.

Charterhouse School's curriculum is aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and offers a broad range of middle and high school courses in language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, health and physical education, art, horticulture, computer technology, and service learning. Charterhouse School's career and technical education programs offer students an introduction to the skills they need to be successful in life. The curriculum also allows students to undertake independent study; i.e., GED preparation or online classes for high school credit. Extracurricular activities such as music, book club, and drama are also offered.

Staff members at Charterhouse School include highly qualified teachers and trained behavior specialists who work together as a team to provide students and their families with coordinated educational services.

Therapeutic Treatment Services in the Public Schools

Therapeutic Treatment Services in the Public Schools is a Medicaid-approved service, available on a year-round basis to serve students with behavioral and emotional problems that prevent them from functioning with their peers and teachers in a school setting. Our goal is to help students display age-appropriate behavior at home, in the school, in the neighborhood, and in the community at large. As a result, we expect to reduce suspensions, improve school attendance and time on task, resulting in improved grades and test scores.
