The relationship between the United Methodist Church and UMFS goes back to the very beginning, when UMFS was founded in 1900 as the Virginia Conference Orphanage of the Methodist Church. Although we are no longer a formal part of the United Methodist Church, UMFS continues to be a ministry of the church.
We deeply value our longstanding collaboration with churches across Virginia, both United Methodist churches and churches from other denominations. Local churches provide passionate volunteers, dedicated foster families, much needed prayers, and critical donations to support the high-risk children and families we serve. We are grateful for this partnership.

Teens like Melvin.
When Melvin was 15, his life changed dramatically. He entered foster care. He was referred to UMFS, and got involved in the UMFS Project LIFE program, which equips teens in foster care with critical life skills.
Melvin was skeptical at first, but over time he became one of Project LIFE’s most active members. The skills Melvin developed through Project LIFE helped him achieve a major life goal: college. Today, Melvin is proud to be a student at Old Dominion University.
You can help teens like Melvin achieve a brighter future.
