UMFS Green Thumbs plant sale is May 6

In the Winter of 2000, a couple asked horticulture teacher and UMFS greenhouse manager Susan Westfall to create arrangements for their upcoming wedding. She gathered a group of students together, they voted on names and became the Green Thumbs Club.

That same year the spring plant sale happened for the first time—by accident. “The women’s auxiliary was holding its annual rummage sale and they suggested that the Green Thumbs Club sell their tomatoes as part of the event,” Susan explains. “The next thing we knew the tomatoes were all sold and we were taking potted plants over which also were a huge hit.” The spring plant sale has happened every May since 2000 and has become part of the culture at UMFS. This year’s sale is on Wednesday, May 6th from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. This is the same day as our annual employee appreciation event, where 450 UMFS employees from across the state gather at the Richmond campus.

Special thanks this year goes to Nicole and Stan Schermerhorn from “A Thyme to Plant Herb Farm” in Glen Allen who have donated herbs, plants, and pots to the sale over the last ten years. Thanks also to Brian Singleton at “Jubilant Gardens” in Chesterfield.
