Sophia Booker is a former foster youth. As a teenager, she was encouraged to attend UMFS’ Project LIFE, a program for foster youth which prepares them for life as an adult and helps them form positive, stable connections with caring adults in their life. Project LIFE had a big impact on Sophia.

“I was extremely nervous, but also extremely excited,” shared Sophia. Sophia Booker was one of three youth moderators at the Virginia Gubernatorial Candidate Forum. The September 8th event was sponsored by Voices for Virginia’s Children to enable Virginians to hear the candidates’ positions on key children’s issues.

The menu for today is rack of lamb served with roasted asparagus, glazed carrots and quinoa, with a berry trifle for dessert. You might think you’re dining in a five star restaurant, but this menu was developed and prepared by the UMFS Charterhouse School culinary students.

“We’re going off-roading now,” said Chip, 27, to his 16-year-old brother Justin. For many teenage boys, that would be an exciting adventure. But when you’re medically fragile and use a wheelchair, it can be quite frightening. That’s when Deborah Nickerson knew she really needed help. Her home’s wheelchair ramp was broken and scaring her children.
