Residential Treatment

UMFS offers residential treatment on our 33-acre campus in Richmond. The UMFS Residential Treatment Program is widely recognized for its innovative and successful approach to youth development, mental health treatment and case management for adolescents with emotional, behavioral, psychiatric and psychological problems that can best be addressed in a residential setting. The youth in the Residential Treatment Program attend the fully accredited, year-round Charterhouse School.

Adolescents with Emotional and Behavioral Problems

Youth ages 11-18 in residential treatment may be struggling with mood, anxiety, adjustment, developmental and other disorders. Our multidisciplinary treatment team brings skills in psychiatry, social work, nursing, special education, milieu therapy, and recreational therapy together in a program designed to prepare the youth to return to living with parents, extended family members, and treatment foster families—or even to living independently.

We believe that all of our youth have strengths and resources we can help them draw upon and maximize for their own benefit. Compassionate relationships combined with consistency and structure help return youth to their communities resulting in successful outcomes.

Sexually Reactive Males

This program addresses the special needs of youth 11-18 years old who have engaged in sexually harmful behaviors, often related to loss, neglect, and physical or sexual abuse. Through the UMFS treatment model, they learn to take responsibility for their abusive behavior and cope with the impact of past traumatic experiences. Our strengths based treatment approach focuses on:

  • strengths
  • feelings management
  • empathy & compassion for self & others
  • healthy sexual development
  • appropriate self-care
  • relapse prevention and aftercare
