Charterhouse School

Charterhouse School is a fully accredited and fully equipped school for youth ages 11 to 18 who are in our Residential Treatment Program. Charterhouse School offers a broad curriculum of middle- and high-school courses in a 5:1 student-to-staff ratio environment. The school’s program also offers extracurricular activities and special courses in which students can explore creative and therapeutic expression.

Charterhouse School’s innovative program has been successful in educating students who have difficulty in a standard school setting due to emotional, social, and behavioral difficulties. The school’s curriculum and teaching goals conform to the Virginia Standards of Learning and are designed to prepare students for future educational and employment objectives. The school operates year-round.


Charterhouse School Therapeutic Day Program

Youth 11-18 years of age who live in the Richmond area and are struggling in their school setting attend our specialized education day program offered by Charterhouse School. We accept students with poor motivation, poor impulse control, short attention span, withdrawn behavior and with the following conditions:

  • Emotional disturbances
  • Learning disabilities
  • Perceptual disorders
  • Language disorders
  • Hyperactivity

In this individualized program, students learn academic and social-emotional skills enabling them to return successfully to their community schools.

Charterhouse School is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education and accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities. Our Charterhouse Therapeutic Day Program is in session from September through June and offers a flexible innovative academic program aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning. The program promotes academic excellence, creativity, and social and personal responsibility.

NEW! Charterhouse School Therapeutic Day Program launched summer programming and after-school programming in 2008. The Day Program expanded to three classrooms in September 2008. Click here for a brochure with more information.


Guardian Place Adult Living

Adults 55 and over who have low-to-moderate income have an attractive residential option in Guardian Place, an independent-living community affiliated with UMFS. The 234 apartments of Guardian Place provide a comfortable and safe living environment on our Richmond Campus, conveniently located in suburban Richmond. Residents are able to maintain an active lifestyle and participate in many community activities.
